Bill, is it possible that on the site with the PNG upgrade issue that you had mapped the .png extension to ASP.NET in your IIS configuration?

My comments are my own and are offered WITHOUT PREJUDICE

@Shaun,

I had the .png issue, and it was using ASP.NET for image extensions. Even with the images extensions removed from ASP.NET and an IIS Reset, there was no change. The only way I could get the .png's to render was to use the iFinity URLRewrite. Regardless, if it was the IsapiModule, I would expect it to effect .gif,.jpg as well.

@Chris, @Shawn -

That might be the trigger for this issue - mapping image files throgh ASP.Net. I did note that in both UrlRewrite HttpModule (DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule in UrlRewriteModule.vb) and also in the Global_BeginRequest method in App_Code/Global.asax.vb, request with images files ending with the .png extension are NOT excluded from further processing as are .jpg, gif, etc. A quick look at the code in the UrlRewriteModule On_BeginRequest method leads me to believe that that is where the automatic addition of new portal aliases takes place in DotNetNuke 5.06.00. and where .png file paths may be getting added incorrectly.

So far I am still unable to reproduce this issue with various configurations of IIS 7.5 on local host - will try mapping image files through ASP.Net later today. In the following related thread I have posed a series of questions to try to find what factors are common to this issue:

If you have a chance, please supply answers in that thread.

If you have the following in your web.config file it will cause the multiple aliases to be created.  After upgrading to 5.6 you will also no longer be able to access the root of your site.  You can get to http://site.com/default.aspx but not http://site.com/

It's very easy to reproduce.  I'll post a screencast later.

I have also noticed this Will in a test environment. I use the manageHandler for extension-less pages and your modules Rewrite.
