    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=aliens\webspace;Initial Catalog=DotNetNukeNewTest;User ID=CFIWebSpace;Password=*****" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=aliens\webspace;Initial Catalog=DotNetNukeNewTest;User ID=CFIWebSpace;Password=5latfATf" /> -->
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(aliens\webspace);Database=DotNetNukeNewTest;uid=CFIWebspace;pwd=****;"/>

I get the following error

Connection Error
index: 0
source: .net sqlclient data Provider
class: 20
Number: -1
Message: blank

Im not sure what is wrong the database settings are the same as another dnn install that is working. the iis settings are also fine.

My database is on an instance. in the configure database connection screen i set the server to aliens\webspace is this correct format for database instances?

the format of your db server is fine.  Must be something else such as that user not having access to that database.  Try connecting your Management Studio to the db with those creds.

Hello thanks for the response. I was able to connect with that user to the database through the sql management studio. I will check google for that error message
