OK - I am having some major problwms with upgrading DNN from 5.02 to 5.06.01.

I am hosing on GoDaddy.

I backed up the database and pulled down all the files.and got the website running on my machine.

I thied the upgrade and it failed - with mising files in the install folder.  So I wiped that install from my machine, copied a clean install from 5.02 and dropped the backup files on top of it and got the website running.  Istall went off without a hitch.

So I thought I should be able to backup the database - restore it on godaddy copy my local install up to the server, reset the permissions and all would be good.

I got the under construction page.

Restored the database again - no change.

Error I was getting was:

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'Telerik.Web.UI' or one of its dependencies. The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest. (d:\hosting\allstargames\web.config line 114)

Ran the install just to see what would happen I got this:

Access to the path 'd:\hosting\allstargames\install\Cleanup\03.00.08.txt' is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'd:\hosting\allstargames\install\Cleanup\03.00.08.txt' is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

Source Error:

The source code that generated this unhandled exception can only be shown when compiled in debug mode. To enable this, please follow one of the below steps, then request the URL:

1. Add a "Debug=true" directive at the top of the file that generated the error. Example:

  <%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" %>

or:

2) Add the following section to the configuration file of your application:

<configuration>
   <system.web>
       <compilation debug="true"/>
   </system.web>
</configuration>

Note that this second technique will cause all files within a given application to be compiled in debug mode. The first technique will cause only that particular file to be compiled in debug mode.

Important: Running applications in debug mode does incur a memory/performance overhead. You should make sure that an application has debugging disabled before deploying into production scenario.

OK - it was a permissions issue - I think.

I reset the folder permissions for all children to inherit and invoked the install again.

It gave me an xml parsing error - but i tried the site anyway and it came up - hopefully everything works...

Firstly, what version were you upgrading FROM ?  And yes it looked like a file permissions error.

Secondly, as a rule if any part of an upgrade fails - you should not really just rerun the upgrade - as some items can be left in an ambiguous state.

Before any update you should make a backup of your files and data - and roll back to this point and go again.

Having said this - a couple of things to try first - go into host settings > performance and set Compression Settings to No Compression.

There have been a lot of reports from people that this is causing problems with their sites ... especially in the action menu area.
There have been some suggestions that replacing the action menu module with a alternate works best.

dnnmoduleactions.codeplex.com is a great replacement for the somewhat klunky action menu in the core - kinda wish this one was actually merged into the core - its much faster and cleaner.

Westa,

Thanks for the 411 on the OSS Action Menu option, it is very nice and I love the simple right click functionality.  Much nicer than over over a triangle...

I will put in a good word with the rest of the Core Team next time we meet, however the only chance of it being integrated into the core is for the project owner to reach out to DNN and offer.  There are several legal/licensing hurdles that have to be overcome before anything can be added to DNN's Core Lib.  But I will see if I can get any traction (may very well be that this has already come to the attention of the team and there are reasons it is not in the core that we just do not know about...).
