We have been trying to install the latest version of DNN 5.6.1 Community on our dedicated server for the past 4 days with NO success except for numerous error messages. We have been running and installing DNN without any problems since version 2, but now we are at a loss for words on how frustrating this has been.

System: Windows Server 2003 SP2
IIS 6.0
ASP.net 1, ASP.net 2, ASP.net 3.5, and ASP.net 4 installed with all latest Windows Updates
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (Local)

We are currently running DNN 3, - DNN 4.9 in separate installs on the same server without any trouble. We have tried every tip available in the forums so far. The main error we most commonly get after a clean install of both the DNN 5.6.1 directory and a New database is as follows:

Installing Database - Version 05.00.00...FAILURE 400 - Generic failure

Lots of information to work off there. The Database has DB Owner rights and the DNN Directory has Network Service (Full Control).

If anyone wishes to offer Paid support to get DNN 5.6.1 up and running on our Dedicated server, please reply ASAP. We'll take any advice from the Experts here too.

Thanks,

Matt Thomas

Matt, did you try installing DNN using MS Web Platform Installer from www.microsoft.com/web - IMHO the easiest option to get it to run.

That was our next step for later tonight, so we can restart the Server after hours. Any idea what is causing the bulk of the issues?

First off - do a complete wipe of both your database and DNN folder.

On your sql server make sure it is configured for mixed mode authentication
Create a sql user with full access rights
Create a new database to hold DNN and assign the user you just created full rights to the database (dbowner)
Make sure the new database is set to at least level 90 compatibility
Make sure your database is configured for full remote access over tcp/ip

Now the DNN side --  unpack the INSTALL.zip into your empty folder
Grant full rights to the NETWORK SERVICE - do it after you unpack the folder - and make sure u let it iterate thru all the new files.
- do NOT edit the web.config
Make sure IIS is configured correctly.
Browse to your dnn install - and use the install wizard - select CUSTOM mode not TYPICAL - and enter the database connection details

Give that work thru a try.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Nothing new to report after 2 more Clean Installs directly following the directions in the above post. This has been the same thing each time we have done.

New DB and DB User each time, setup with DB owner Access
Fresh Install in the Inetpub folder for DNN 5.6.1
Left the Web.config untouched this time
Entered the correct databse settings and hit next.

Then the all so familiar DNN 5.6.1 error
Installing Database - Version 05.00.00...FAILURE 400 - Generic failure

How about a more stable installation to install (5.5 or something else?
Now I can see why more people do not attempt installing this on their own.

HELP please...

Matt
