I work for a small company that does software consulting. We recently won a project involving updating and patching an existing DNN site. I have been scouring the internet for forums and tutorials to help, but I have encountered a brick wall in attempting to set up the site internally. The most detailed tutorial I have used can be found here:

http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/a...

The site version is 5.1.1 accompanied by a database backup file. I have tried to use the site to perform a clean install, then switch the database to a restored copy of the backup, but to no avail. Once I switch the database to the client copy, the site itself does not load. I receive the generic error message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I feel like I am missing some internal settings that is preventing the client site from loading. I am available for further clarification and appreciate any help.

DNN is a marriage between the web files and the database. After an initial install, both the database and the file system are changed when modules are installed or files uploaded. When you perform an upgrade of DNN to a later version, you do so (after appropriate backups) by extracting files from a DNN upgrade package over the current file system. Then you navigate to a particular URL which spawns the running of database scripts to update the database, and other actions that update file versions.

You can't just take one DNN database and another DNN file system and expect them to work together. It sounds like that is what you are doing.

If your goal is to update DNN, get the upgrade packages for DNN 5.4.4, 5.5.0 and 5.6.2 and upgrade from your current version along that path. Make sure any third party modules will work with all versions, and obtalin latest versions of each, would be generally a good idea.

A full backup of file system and database before starting and between each version upgrade is advisable.

I is also advisable to take full backups prior to installing modules, so that if something goes wrong, you can roll back to a previous state.

Sounds like you've not setup IIS or the DB connection. Try these step...although they are very brief and not strictly "Full covering", it might give you a direction to try....and like Micheal says, "MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP"

Restore your DB into SQL Server,

Extract your DNN file system.

Look at the portalAlias table in the DB, check what url's you have in there , your going to need a test url to put in IIS. you can add one directly into the table if you wish.

In IIS setup the website to point to the DNN folder and bind the test url you using.

Edit your web.config file to change the DB connection (you'll find 2 of them) to point to your DB.

The give it a try in the browser with your test url.

Regards,

Dave.
