Hi

I have a friend with a company site.
He called me today and said that there were some problem with the homepage.
When i looked in the file systems i found that the web.config is gone.
I know he have not done it, since he dont have the ftp account, and i have not deleted the file since i now longer have the ftpsettings on my computer.. I had to go to the webhotel panel and reset the password.
So my thought is that its been hacked, other pages he have works greate.

The version of the installation is 4.5.5 (i know its very old)

How can i fix this?

I downloaded the 4.5.5 version and added the database information in the web.config file.
But i did forgot that when you install the system it gives the web.config som speciell information that i dont have since i dont have a backup
Not it says Exception Details: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file 'c:\DotNetNuke.config'. when i go to the homepage.

Is there a way for me to fix this?

Greatful for help..

please check the config folder to see if you have a backup - note: if you can't log in you've lost your machinekey values and will need to reset your accounts to et it (e.g. http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Recover-passwords.aspx ) - obviously this is a last-resort thing so I recommend you replace the web.config from your backup. BTW 4.5.5 has a number of known issues, one of which (if combined with IIS6) could lead to asp files being uploaded (they look like hack.asp;safe.jpg) that would allow a hacker to add, edit and delete files- this may be what youre seeing. I highly recommend you upgrade as 4.5.5 is over 4 years old.

Can you clarify this?  If there is no web.config, NO pages should be working...

Thanks for responding.

With "Other pages he have" i mean that he got other DNN installations on the webserver that works,

I found a copy of a web.config file in the config folder. When i put that it stil says "Could not find file 'c:\DotNetNuke.config"

I would be happy if i could get this working so i could upgrade it. He got a lot of information, settings, custom modules, thats why i would like it to be  online again so i could do a "planed upgrade" :-) .

I assume, there are still files missing, not necessarily the one mentioned (I don't expect your hostin provider to install the website in the root of the drive).
I suggest downloading DNN 4.5.5 upgrade package from dotnetnuke.codeplex.com (select version in the box on the right hand side), unzip hierarchically and upload, overwriting existing files on your site. As soon as you get the site running, backup all files and the database and start upgrading.
