No blame DNN for not having THOSE types of problems listed in their documentation on what to look out for.

I am not a newbie at Windows or Windows development, just ASP.Net development, and was even system administrator for 5+ years. I have never had any problems at all until I tried to install this thing.

How was *i* to know that DNN was going to need write permissions to those folders when it should have been taken care of with thte IIS or DNN installations?

MB34, we're looking at installer/upgrade enhancements to try and automate/check various things, but the requirements are documented in documents/readme.txt in case you ever need to check (also on the wiki and various other locations)

Sorry, CC, but the readme says nothing about the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder or the Windows\Temp folder.

Now, I created another App Pool account for my installation and it is set to the NETWORK SERVICE identity. I have had to manually modify the permissions on the Windows\Temp folder but gpupdate set the permissions on the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder ok. I'm just hoping that the permissions stay because they've been resetting when I log off and log back on.

FWIW - its NOT dnn that needs write permissions for the asp.net temp folder its ASP.NET.

If you use the default AppPoolUser that WINDOWS 7 uses out of the box - this user is automatically granted the correct permissions for the asp.net TEMP folder.

Then all you needed to do was grant this same AppPoolUser full permission for the dotnetnuke root folder.  This has been well documented for windows 7 and asp.net since 2009 - and there is a detailed wiki entry on the dotnetnuke site that cathal wrote that long ago as well.

This again has NOTHING really to do with DNN - but is a factor of how windows 7 was designed to lock down security and prevent cross application hacking.

As for why dnn or any asp.net application requires this sort of permissions  -  its quite simple - without them you cant do an install or restart an application pool - since dnn would not have permission to access and update the website contents.

And once again - if you had used the Windows Platform Installer - all this is handled for you. . .

MB34, are you kidding, you have never encountered a difficult issue in your 5 years as a system administrator. Common any system administrator knows what Google is, give it try, the answers are there.

Seriously, your DNN bashing is unwarranted and unrelated; it’s basic windows administration.
