Hi all,

Now that I have the issue of installing new DNN installations to my localhost I now have an issue trying to host my current live site on my localhost.

I want to take my DNN 5.5.1 site that is hosted by a provider and bring it to my localhost so I can play with the site without affecting the live. I am using SQL 2008 R2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. I have so far tried the following:

Perform a clean install of DNN 5.5.1 locally using the same database name and account as the live version. Then overwrite the database with the live version and overwrite the files with the live versions. Modify the web.config file to point to my localhost SQL server. However this fails.

I have also tried to just import the database and copy the files over without installing DNN locally. Modify the web.config files but again this fails.

In both instances I get re-directed to the under construction page. When I turn off the error page to see the actual error message it point to malformed XML. But I don't see how this could be as the web.config file is the one from the live site and this works.
Is there a set by step guild somewhere (as I have not found one) that tells you how to move a site from hosted provider to a local host?

Thanks

Right I am still having problems with this and have had no help so far. However I have found the following link: Setting up a local test copy of yours site

I have been following this as best I can as I am using Windows 7 with SQL 2008 R2 and IIS7 so it's not all the same. I went on the my site and specified localhost in the Portal Alias section, downloaded a new copy of the DNN database then set back on with the instructions.
When following the section on restoring the database I got the same errors. However the supplied quiery would not work so I found the following: ALTER USER <Database login ID> WITH LOGIN = <Database login ID> and this appears to work.
When I go to http://localhost/<sitename> I no longer get any errors but I am taken to the live version of my site (http://www.<sitename>.com)

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can resolve this.
Thanks

You may need to add a new alias for your localhost address...something like localhost/dnntest (or whatever the name is on your machine.

Thanks for the info, I amy be wrong but when you put that info in to the portal alias section when logged in as host the info is stored in the database. If this is the case is there a way to manually inject that info in to the database? Or would it be best to just pop the info back in to the live site, then re-download the database again?

Cheers

I've always done it using SQL Scripts...or accessing the db directly...but I'm pretty comfortable with SQL. You could do it on the original DB then make the move.
