Hi , Im a newbie to DNN so please forgive any terminology errors

I have just uploaded all the install files from my hard drive into a sub directory on my windows hosting server (www.daily.co.uk) so that my existing web site still runs but it allows me to play with DNN.

However, when I try the site (www.gaintwii.co.uk/dnn/default.aspx) I got an error message that asked me to change the web.config file to display errors

<system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web>
When I did this I now just get a message that says

500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

Help !! where do i go from here ???

Thanks in advance

Kev

Hey Kev,

Do you have access to IIS on the server? The error message indicates that it is an IIS configuration issue. I believe you're running IIS 7. So, once you've placed the files into the appropriate directory, you can create a new virtual directory, set the path to the file system path on your server, and then convert that virtual directory to an application.

If you don't have the ability to do that - perhaps someone at your hosting provider can help?

Hope that helps!

Thanks Ian,

I dont have access to IIS on the server !

I spoke to the support team at the web hosting company and at first they said that DNN should work fine.

However I googled the error and found a post mentioning that it needed maximum trust level so I contacted the host company again and they came back saying that they don't support elevated trust levels !

I started to consider using a different CMS (Umbraco, drupel Joomla wordpress etc) but i want to use DNN so its beginning to look like I need a new web host .

Anybody got recommendations of a good host company that fully supports DNN, with unlimited bandwidth ?? Im in the UK but a US company would be fine. Must be inexpensive as well LOL Im paying £65 per year (around $100 USD) at the moment.

Thanks
Kev

i got the same problem, but when i checked the IIS setting and by clicking to .Net trust in IIS7.5, i got a popup that i have a problem in my web.config file. and i found out that i have a syntax error in my file (no closet comment --> )
so the site worked fine after that.

Hey Kevin,

DNN doesn't require full trust. It will run just fine in medium trust. Any third-party modules that you may purchase/acquire could have a requirement for elevated trust, but if you're running a "plain vanilla" DNN site - you shouldn't have any issues.

You may look into Khalil's fix (finding and correcting any web config syntax errors) to see if it will work for you.

Hope that helps,

Ian
