I encountered the same problem with DNN Version 4.03. I don’t know exactly what your scenario was but I originally installed version 4.03 from the source code zip file and had no problems. Yesterday I decided I wanted to set up a completely separate DotNetNuke site for testing purposes and be able to work with both the test site and my “production” site on my Win XP Pro desktop using IIS 5.1 so I renamed my .sln file and the two urls called http://localhost/DotNetNuke_2 in that file to match my renamed virtual directory in IIS. The renaming exercise is so you can work with both sites in VS 2005. I got the same error when I tried to build the website in VS 2005 and when I tried to access it in IE.

Here is what I found. I hope it at least gets you past this problem but note I am working with 4.03 not 3.1.1. In 4.03 under the DNN root directory there is a directory called "Website". Under that directory there is another directory called App_Code with two files called AssemblyInfo.vb and Global.asax.vb. The App_Code directory and its two files were missing! I recreated the App_Code folder and copied the two files to it from the DNN source code zip file. That fixed the problem! Maybe my caffeine level was low last night and I inadvertently deleted that folder but I don’t think I did. If somebody knows what went wrong and how that folder got deleted I would certainly like to know. Maybe my renaming effort is not a good idea. I did have a lot of trouble with this when I was working with version 3.2 and VS 2003 so I stopped trying to maintain two DNN sites on the same IIS 5.1 installation. VS 2003 had difficulty recognizing them as separate solutions. Any enlightenment on the disappearing folder and any advice on the proper way to maintain two completely separate DNN sites on the same IIS installation would be much appreciated.
