I didn't realize that there is a log to look at. I've already restored, but I'll try the standard update again and see if I can get the log. I think it's related to permission (maybe Plesk related) The permissions were right to install originally.. and run normally. Not sure what would have changed now when trying to upgrade, but hopefully the log will point that out.

I've seen this type of thing happen when you use plesk's tool to install the initial state - in some configurations plesk will use it's sql user (i.e. the sa account, which has all permissions) for the initial creation of the database and install of dotnetnuke - however when you come to do an upgrade dotnetnuke has to use your connection string and it has incorrect permissions.
