So, I have been migrating sites from one server to another. First migrating the database to the new DB server, and testing; Then uploading the site contents via FTP to the new Web Server (IIS 7 and SQL2008). I migrated four sites and all of them worked perfectly, I was pleasantly surprised!

Then I followed the exact same procedure for migrating the 5th site and have been getting a "401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials." error. I'm thinking it has something to do with the Application Pool identity, as all of the other sites had individual domain accounts that the App Pool ran under which transferred over to the new server.

The 5th site was running under Network Service account on the old server and I originally tried running it under Network Service on the new server. Then changed it to the AppPoolIdentity account, also with no results.

Any Idea what I might need to do to get this site running?

Thanks in advance,

John

if you want to use App Pool identity, please read: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/2420/Windows-7-Windows-2008-R2-cross-application-pool-isolation.aspx

Thank you for your quick reply Sebastian. I am aware of setting permissions with the App Pool Identity and already set the permissions according to the information on the link you provided. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to work.

Any other ideas?

what is the database connection string - if it uses a username/password you dont need to worry about it, but if it uses windows authentication or the site runs under impersonation, this issue could happen as the local use (networkservice) would not have the necessary permissions. I had a customer once who had this issue, and we tracked it down to this - and in their case they'd added the networkservice user to the "domain admins" group (which is incredibly dangerous) - we created a domain user and used aspnet_regiis -ga to ACL the user and granted that use rights on the sql database to resolve)

Thanks Cathal. Connection string uses user name/password, so at least that rules one more thing out.
