Hi - I am working on a site for a non-profit. They have an existing simple HTML site with a local host and their own domain name.

Is there a way to install a DNN community package to a different host, build the new site without moving their existing domain name until the new site is ready to go and without them having to purchase another domain name?

Hello,

Sure, you can definitely do that... Domain names just point to IP addresses. When you get the hosting for the DNN server, just use the IP address to interact with the new site. This should be easy because it means just NOT changing the DNS record from the old site... So, there's nothing you need to do. In DNN, just use the IP address as the alias. Later, you'll add the alias for their domain name and make that the primary.

Incidentally, you can also use a subdomain to aid in your development. I wouldn't do this right away, but once you get some basic stuff up there, you can map something like beta.mydomain.com to your new host. Then, you can involve the NPO's community on the development by telling them to go to that site.

Hope this helps,

Mike

I would suggest do it on local and test out everything first. Once done, just upload to your hosting account and point the domain to this directory thus you don't need to change any other setting.

Hi Kerry,

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like that's much more complicated... You're going to change the DNS record anyway. So, if you develop it with your existing host, you don't need to worry about moving anything - you can do it all right there... The only change is adding a site alias, which isn't really any work at all.

Hope all's well,

Mike

I agree with Mike. If your other site is running at the same time with no impact, I'd build it in DNN and change your DNS record to point to it when it's done.
