further info..
Inside my 05.02.01 file it says lots of stuff like this:

cannot find the object 'grmChangeRepositoryModuleDefId' because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
cannot find the object 'Forum_ThreadViewsDelete' because it does not exist or you do not have permission.

I have ASP.Net account and Network Service allowed in the root folder with permission to access the dnn files.

the upgrade overwrites my web.config file - but the connection string remains the same.
I have tried replacing with my orig web.config file, but my site still looks entirely corrupt and all I can see is the skin with lots of errors in place of my modules, saying:

"An error has occurred. Error: Home [DNN module title] is currently unavailable".

any ideas?

Re-install your 5.1.1 backup and then have a look at this page. It recomends two intermediate updates.

thanks I will try other versions,

Do I have to navigate to install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade  - to activate the upgrade ?

I've been entering just install/install.aspx

should the upgrade force any changes to the web.config file at any point?

p.s.
I wonder if DNN has thought about creating some kind of data matrix spreadsheet where DNN users could enter there upgrade attempts and state from which version upgrades have been successful to other versions?

Mark,

You should not need to add install or upgrade or anything else - just visit the website root and DNN should automatically run the UpgradeWizard.

If new capabilities have been added then new properties will need written into the web.config file, but existing core properties will not normally be changed - now if it is a property introduced by a 3rd party module and now being introduced to core, then I could see a possible conflict.
