1. I checked the error message on the actual server and it gave me lots of errors relating to Telerik.

2. I commented out all references to Telerik and ran the upgrade - it still gave me the errors mentioned above.

3. I checked the errors in the providers folder and here they are below:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot find the object 'grmApproveRepositoryObject', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmChangeRepositoryModuleDefId', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'Forum_ThreadViewsDelete', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryAttributeValues', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'Forum_ThreadViewsIncrement', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryAttributes', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'Forum_Subscriptions_PostDeleted', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryCategory', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'Forum_Subscriptions_PrivateMessage', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryModuleDefId', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryObject', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryObjectCategories', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
Cannot find the object 'grmDeleteRepositoryObjectValues', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.

Full file saved as a text file is here:
http://www.sypensions.org.uk/05.01.02...

the other error files are all pretty much similar to this one.

OK, do you have the Repository Module installed? If you don't, then all the Repository messages can be ignored.

Did you also copy the machinekey from the original web.config to release.config, before renaming release.config to web.config and copying the unzipped files up to the website?

We have the repository module installed, yes.

Although this too needs upgrading (using 3.1.15 and need to upgrade to 3.5.4).
I thought it best to update the repositorym module after the upgrade - but maybe not?

I copied the originally machine key from my original file after copying the unzipped files accross.

Just noticed this - Version 5.4 is when DNN started using the Telerik RADEditor as the default editor, so you really want to get this resolved and working. Can we go back and identify the Telerik related errors and resolve those.

All of the errors in the text log linked above relate to permission errors since you do have the module installed. Can you check the original web.config against the current one again. There should be two SQL connection strings.

This is the error with the 5.4 upgrade:
Could not load file or assembly 'telerik.web.ui' or one of its dependencies.

Then each line in the web.config gets flagged as the error until I comment it out
e.g.
Line 102 <add name= raduploadmodule type= telerik.web.ui.raduploadhttpmodule telerik.web.ui" />

Do I have install the telerik editor prior to the upgrade? or install a previous version?
According to DNN, 5.4 is the next logical version step up from 5.1.
I would have thought that everything would have been included in 5.4 version?

2. I know my root folder has full permissions on asp.net and network service - but maybe it hasn't filtered down - I will check this.
(I know I have a lot of edited files on the repository templates)

thanks.
