To view the source code you Need Visual Studio Professional or higher.  Source Code cold not be viewed over IIS!  The Website is integreated to compile on developement and test your developement.

Basicly the core code should not be modified. On changing the core code all your changes will be overwrite by the next upgrade.

If you want to add own modules or providers the starter package is the best start.  Of cause it is also possible to create own modules with the source package (could help understanding the DNN Framework).

Some properties on the Projectsetting have to bean modified for your localhost Needs.  Before you run the first look on the site you have to compile the Project on VS.  If not all files compiled and added to the Website Folder there must be a configuration issue on your VS Project.

Hyperlinks e.g could be add on the HTML/Text module or there are a Links module availible where you also could add some Hyperlinks.  Please make some more clear what you want to do.
