Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but i'm hoping someone can tell me how I can connect to my database using the information inside the ConnectionString? I want to connect to it with either Filezilla(FTP), or even microsoft sql server management program, but nothing seems to connect so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. for instance, how can i connect to this:

I've removed the exact IP, username, password:
server=ec2-11-**-11-***compute-1.amazonaws.com;Initial Catalog=cat;User ID=myuserid;Password=mypassword

 And how would I connect to this one:
Data Source=172.**.*.*;Initial Catalog=cat;User ID=user;Password=pass
     - i've tried to connect to the IP on ports 22, 80 but no connection. Maybe there is a default port number I am unaware of?

 any help is appreciated!

if the SQL server is available from outside the network or you are inside the local network, you should be able to connect to the database server using datasource value as server name, username and password. If the server is not accessible from outside the network, you need to use a sql server tool provided by your hosting provider.

Are you trying to create a module for your dnn that looks up a different db? is it on the same SQL server as the one you are using for DNN? or on a different server outside the server network? In any case you do need to keep the existing connection string for your DNN instant in web.config and that cannot change.

thanks for the replies!

I am wanting to connect to various sql databases from OUTSIDE the network(remotely from my own computer to various servers).... Is this not possible using sql tools like microsoft sql server 2005 or similar? I do not know the sql tool provided by the host, so I am hoping to be able to connect to it solely based on having the credentials in the web.config file...
