Hi all,

So I am having some real difficulties moving my DNN installation to my remote hosting provided.

I have installed the latest version of DNN on my PC and have configured my site. I am now ready to move my files to my remote hosting providers server - I am uploaded all the files but cannot import the db into the host's SQL server.

I am being advised the following:

A SQL import script is required in order for us to be able to run the required operation.
MDF backup files can't be used in this case I'm afraid.

So I have installed SQL Express and Mgmt Studio but I cannot import the mdf file...

How can I generated a SQL import script from the mdf file so that I can import it into the remote SQL server?

Any help would be very much appreciated...

did you follow the instructions to generate the Import file according to the link you provided?

Right-click your database in SSMS and select:

Script database as --> Create to --> New window

This will script your database but there will be no data. However, if you can connect to the new database once it's in place, you can export your data from your DEV copy to the Production copy.

James,

It appears as though the instructions they gave you were created with the intent that you would use the script you generated to move the database onto MySQL instead of MS SQL. DNN will not run properly on a MySQL database so you may want to verify with the provider that they have MS SQL available and what version they are running. With that said, they should have the capability to use your MDF file or a native .BAK backup file created directly from your local MS SQL installation if they indeed support MS SQL on their hosting. If you continue having issues even after getting the DB migrated over, I may recommend seeking out an alternative for your DNN hosting needs.

The normal process would be to make a backup of your running mssql database on your local machine.

And provide this .bak file to your hosting provider for them to restore onto the remote version of your backup.

Alternatively - if your have remote access to the mssql server - something that should be possible - you could try using a tool like redgates sql compare:

http://www.red-gate.com/products/sql-...   will synchronise the schema of your local and a remote database

http://www.red-gate.com/products/sql-... will synchronise the content of your local and remote database.
