I have been trying to install DNN following precisely the instructions in Chris Hammond's excellent video "DotNetNuke Explained: Installation".

When using the server name "." as instructed by Chris I get "error 0 class 20".
When using the server name ".\SQLExpress" the installation hangs on "installing Database scripts".

I have seen that others have encountered the second problem, but none of their suggested actions help in my case.

I am running on Windows 7 Ultimate and have SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 (R2) on my Start menu but maybe for some reason I am running SQLExpress unintentionally?

You should be putting in the address of your ms sql server.

Firstly - you should verify that your mssql server is actually running

Secondly, that you can connect to your ms sql server using the ms sql management studio.

The server name that you used to connect to ms sql management studio is the exact same name you should use in dnn.

Also you should check what connection permissions are allowed by your ms sql server instance.

For a local installed SQL Server you can use .\ or localhost with the extenssion of \Instancename if you use a instance Name. Make sure the needed ports are opened for local Network on your Firewall. Also be sure you configured the SQL Server to allowed remote connections and configure the protocolls and enabled TCP/IP for the Server and Client protocoll.

If the SQL server is not installed localy use the servername instead localhost !

Also check the Collection you are using for the Database.

Check the Connection permissions on SQL Server and your web.config file, check the databaseOwner value with the Default Schema of your database user connection.
