My upgrade to DNN 7 appeared to work perfectly until I tried to visit my site after the upgrade. I am getting an error on line 298; it appears the the PortalSettings object is null.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Default.aspx.cs:line 298

I restored everything back to the previous version and tried upgrading to version 6 instead. I got the same error (though on a different line). I am running Windows Server 2003, IIS 7, and SQL 2008. The IIS app pool is running Integrated pipeline mode and is using v 4.0 of the framework. I just did a fresh install of DNN 6 recently on the same server, and it works just fine.

Any suggestions for fixing this issue?

I have not come across this problem, so, not sure why you are getting this error.

However, I did want to point out that DNN 7 requires windows 2008 server.

Shaun has a blog that provides the minimum requirements.

Thanks for the reply. My earlier post was incorrect – I am indeed on Windows Server 2008.

I did a line-by-line comparison of web.configs from DNN6 sites that were and were not working. I updated the non-working one with some of the stuff in the working version. Unfortunately, I made several changes so I don't know which one fixed the issue. The non-working config was referencing SolPart menus (?!), and I have a feeling that the problem was related to that.
