Folks,

I have been running DNN Community Edition version 5.6.01 for a long time. I see that version 7.0 is now available. I am trying to understand the proper way to upgrade my current version.

I tried my old technique of copying upgrade package over existing files. However, when I do that, I get an error about ClidentDependency.Core not found. Luckily, I had backed up the previous version before upgrade. Now I am back to 5.6.01 version once again.

First, I thought I may need to upgrade to 6.0.x before upgrading to 7.0.x. However, I don't see any upgrade package for 6.x.

I would appreciate your help in understanding what I need to do to make this work. Also, why am I getting ClientDependency.Core error? The .NET Framework in use is 3.5.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,
Peter

Peter,

DNN 7 requires .Net, and also some other stuff, see here.

There is also a suggested upgrade path, so you should not upgrade from 5.6  to 7.0 directly. In you case, that would mean upgrade to 05.06.08, then to 06.02.06, and then to 07.00.02.

At least after upgrading to 06.02.06, you should change your AppPool to .Net 4. Be careful, if you have other applications using the same AppPool. You can also select a different AppPool (that runs .Net 4) for your web site.

Always make a backup of your database and web site before upgrading, and check if everything works fine before doing the next step.

Best wishes
Michael
