Hi Folks;

I've been trying to do my first DNN installation for a couple of days now.  I have IIS 5.1, SQL Server Express R2 2008  running on XP.

The windows Platform installer option just hung up for hours with no activity, so I downloaded the ZIP file manually,  DotNetNuke_Community_07.00.02_Deploy.zip

and followed the various steps in the PDF installation manual. setting file permissions, IIS virtual directory, etc. . But the extract had no web.config file, so when I go to http:\\localhost\DATABASE  in the web browser, all I get is a  directory listing. Nothing launches.  There is an InstallSQL.sql and a directory called "Install" under dotnetnuke, but I have no idea where to go from here.

Please help.

Thanks,

Rigel

I am pretty sure we only support IIS 7 and greater now with DNN 7.0.

You will likely need to install an older version of DNN, or you will need to get IIS Express installed using Web Matrix.

You'll need a version prior to 7.x if you're running WIndows XP.

Download 6.2.5 from codeplex and you should be OK.

Hello all;

Mark "Download 6.2.5 from codeplex and you should be OK. "

I searched and searched (Google and on the DNN site) for a link to download the older version zip file with no success. Can you post a link, please? (I actually did that searching before going through all the installation steps, but since I could not find it, I assumed that the newest version would be OK.)

The attempts at installing DNN 7 have really messed up my system. Now Windows System Restore fails to rollback to any Restore Point in the past.
I followed the instructions in the PDF file (which does have XP specific steps), I tried the Web Matrix and the Windows Platform and manual installation (I followed the installation video, too.) Every different method failed at different points in the process.

There is all sorts of checking for software and dependency compatibility, but no check for OS compatibility. So all those components that install under the Windows Platform installer are probably for Windows 7. The install proceeds, and I did not get any incompatibility errors. It even went through the IIS 7.5 install, but my IIS console still reports version 5.1. There was no error message that it failed.

Windows Matrix was particularly annoying. It could not log in (with the sa account) to SQL Server. The first screen asks you to login to SQL server with the "sa" account. When I typed in the simple password that I used during the SQL Server Express R2 install (no complaint at the time), it errored out with the message that the password was "too simple", and when I tried a more complex one, it errored out on "password mismatch". Then I went to the Sql Server management console and tried to change the "sa" password, but was never able to be successful, even after rebooting. The sa account cannot be dropped and reinstalled. The Windows Matrix Installer does not allow a different "admin" account. So I got stuck there.

There is reference to XP in the instructions, and in the install process, so I trusted that the installation would be possible. You all really need to update these instructions, or have the compatibility tests to fail when trying to install on XP. I know it's an older system, but it is still very popular. I run XP because I don't trust that my old software will run or install on a higher version of Windows.

Re-imaging my computer is not something that I am looking forward to, but probably will have to do that since System Restore fails. (I tried 5 or 6 different restore points, and none of them worked.)

Please put up information on your install site regarding OS limitations, and a link to the older version for those who just want to try out DNN on an older platform.
Regards,
Rigel

Folks;

I apologize for the duplicate posts. I did not get a confirmation on the first "gripe post" so thought it had been dropped, and re-wrote the post. Sorry for the inconvenience, but my level of frustration right now is at the point of "expletive deleted". :-)
