Hi all,

Has anyone managed to upgrade to DNN7 on windows server 2003 ?

My current setup is DNN 06.02.07 , Server 2003 , IIS 6 , SQL 2005

I have read the system requirements for DNN7 and understand that server 2003 is NOT on the list , IIS6 Not on the list , SQL 2005 Not on the list.

So where does that leave us guys that have the latest DNN6 ?

This means I now need to upgrade OS to 2008/2012 , upgrade IIS , Upgrade SQL to 2008/2012 ?

So there is now a total disconnect between users of DNN4/DNN5/DNN6 and Users of DNN7

Can't start a new install of DNN7 because I need all my previous data.

Anyone have any thoughts ?

If you do get new hardware and install Windows Server 2012 on it you can install your current DNN by copying your files from the folder where you installed your previous installation and a restore of your SQL data. I do that all the time when upgrading to newer operating systems and/or hardware.

Hiya and thx for the reply.

I have moved / restored / upgraded DNN many times myself also.

My question relates to the fact that you can't upgrade to DNN7 without upgrading your OS from server 2003,upgrading SQL from 2005 and upgrading IIS from version 6.

There are many costs involved in such an upgrade, thats why I am trying to see if anyone has managed to install DNN7 on server 2003.

So it's more of a jump to DNN 7 rather than an upgrade.

I guess My plan now would be..

New hardware\server 2012\latest SQL\latest IIS

Then copy my current DNN6 site to the new server and try get it up and running as version 6.

Then upgrade to Dnn7 ?

Ray..

Ray,

accidentally I upgraded a DNN portal to DNN 7 on Windows Server 2003. I already had SQL Server 2008R2 there, and: The site works well.

This is not a "Just do it, no problems", more a: backup site and database and try. Hopefully it works, but there is no guarantee.

Best wishes
Michael

Hiya Michael,

I have a backup server that I am testing the DNN7 upgrade on.

backup server is windows 2003\sql 2005\iis 6 - DNN6

When I try run DNN7 upgrade I get the error

Error clientdependency.core

This error relates to the fact that I need to install .net4, so I installed .net4 and changed the default site to point to the .net4 instance.

Now when I try to run the upgrade wizard I get the error "Website cannot be found"

Thats when i decided to write this post to see what else I need to do ? upgrade sql ? upgrade IIS (leaving OS at server 2003 ?)

Any ideas ? maybe your upgrade worked becasue you have sql 2008 ?

Ray..
