For the record, I tried the "Standard Process" from the following page, as opposed to the Web Matrix option. Same result (reported successful installation but when the browser is launched I get the same errors as in the original post of this thread).

there must be an unusual setting somewhere in the server, but it is hard to diagnose.
If you upload just the DNN install package files and browse your site, what happens?

Start from first principals -

1. can you verify that IIS is running and configured correctly by browsing to http://localhost/.
2. Can you verify that sql server is running and configured by opening the sql manager.

3. At the command prompt - can you run these commands with out an execution failure:

%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regiis.exe -i

%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.21006\aspnet_regiis.exe -i

4. Create a folder and install the dnn install,zip files into it

5. in IIS create a new website and point to that folder.
site its binding to localhost or some other domain -- dnn721.local is always good

6. Edit your hosts file to include whatever domain you allocated

7. Browse to that domain - see what happens.

My apologies for the delay (the VM on which I am attempting this installation is at home and I have not been able to look at this for the last couple of evenings).

With thanks for the ideas and suggestions, I would like to step back a little and make sure the path I am hoping to take is reasonable and fully supported. As I have mentioned from the outset, I am attempting to install DNN as "clean" as I can - I don't want to have to mess with file permissions, etc unless that is absolutely unavoidable. If I have a problem with a "basic" install, I'd like to understand that and resolve that rather than work around it. Hopefully that sets the stage for the following comments.

A number of the suggestions suggest registering ASP.Net, changing file permissions, deploying the .zip files, etc. In short, I don't want to do that :) Seriously, I want to go down a path that APPEARS to be fully supported, which is either from the "Standard Package" or installing from WebMatrix. I'd like to understand whether these two options are reasonable to get a basic installation up and running and, if so, what steps I need to take.

To follow up on one of Wes' comments (step 2), it is my assumption that if I go with the WebMatrix option then SQL Server can be installed as a dependency and I don't need to install it manually. Is that a fair assumption? The WebMatrix option is attractive to me because it seems that it takes care of all my dependencies and - aside from the error I am seeing - leaves me with a simple, functional DNN installation. Again, I'd like to know if this is an unreasonable expectation.

To go on a rant a little, I remember a thread about a year ago where I expressed frustration that virtually every comment I got about installing DNN involved messing with file permissions, SQL Server roles, etc. For the most basic installation, that seemed really cumbersome. At the time, someone chimed in and said he was looking at the whole DNN installation and configuration issue. My hope, at the time, was that there would be some really simple way to get a basic DNN site up and running. WebMatrix seemed like an attempt at that. "Follow the wizard and you have a basic DNN installation". But as soon as I encounter issues we're back to square one - downloading the zip files, messing with file permissions, etc. I can't imagine the number of curious folks who have taken a look at DNN and just given up.

I'd really like to see a COMPLETE step-by-step guide to installing DNN Platform on (say) WS 2008 R2 or WS 2012. Assuming a clean install of the OS (from the "DVD"), what steps would I take to get up and running - install the ASP.Net role, etc. That would really help.

Anyway, back to the core question - is it reasonable for me to attempt an installation through WebMatrix. The steps I have taken so far are:

. Install WS 2008 R2 SP1
. Install and check the ASP.Net role
. Run the WebMatrix installer for DNN Platform, following all defaults
. Hope for a DNN site (this bit fails).

I am so close to losing it with DNN :( So, I still want to work out the issues with the WS 2008 R2 installation, using WebMatrix. But, in parallel, I have done a fresh install - again using WebMatrix - on WS 2012.

The good news is that the install browser actually reaches a valid URL after the initial (WebMatrix) part of the installation. Breakthrough! So, I follow on and get to the web-based installation where it prompts me for a database. Well, OK - I'll install SQL Server Express 2012 and create my database. I know I need to grant permissions - somewhere. But can't recall the exact accounts I need to use (apppool\defaultapppool perhaps)? There's nothing on the page that tells me anything about this.

But good news - there's a handy link at the top of the page - "View Installation Video". Cool! Finally, some help. I click it - and end up here: http://www.dnnsoftware.com/Solutions/Services/Training/Subscription.

Sigh.

Does anyone check this stuff before it ships? I work at a rather large company and we ship software (you all know my company). We run user studies and watch customers try our stuff. If they don't get it we make it better. Does anyone at DNN "look over the shoulder" of folks when they are presented with just the page that has the various installation options? Does anyone see what documentation they uncover if they are left on their own to find things on the DNN site? For example, show me one page that documents how I install through WebMatrix on either WS 2008 R2 or WS 2012. Not just the package - I am looking for a step-by-step guide.

Does anyone think it might be useful to document how one might install using WebMatrix on this page (as opposed to downloading zip files)? http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/Page/Install_DotNetNuke

In short, I'd LOVE to see someone watch a newbie user try to work their way through this without resorting to forums and file permissions and SQL roles and so on. And I am not a newbie. I've had a DNN web site for several years. But I do this rarely enough (install from scratch) that I don't always recall the nuances every time I come back to this. That's what documentation is for.
