I have run the WebMatrix installer on WS 2012 (not WS 2008 R2 - still having problems with that) and get to the first page of the installation wizard. I'd like to understand my options for the database.

The two options presented are SQL Server Express file or SQL Server Express Database. Where is WebMatrix "pointing" me? I note that WebMatrix installs SQL Server as a prereq. So, at that stage I haven't done a thing with SQL Server. So, I'm not sure what steps I should take (in the case of the most simple installation) in the wizard. File or database? Do I need to create that database ahead of time or does WebMatrix take care of that for me?

More importantly, where can I read simple, step-by-step instructions for getting up and running (the SQL Server aspect, in particular)? The following pages has some (reasonably poorly written) installation instructions but it assumes a "manual" installation (not WebMatrix). It also seems to assume I have already created my database (correct?).

I'd love to see simple start-to-finish instructions for installing DNN, including SQL Server configuration and creation of a database.

Thanks.

Mark

OK, I figured it out. It took a while because the instructions on the page I mentioned are incorrect (I had to make changes to the user mapping to the app pool account, not NETWORK SERVICE). I just don't understand how something as basic and essential can be left broken. It seems the page hasn't been edited for over a year.

The video's at the bottom seem really old too (DNN 5.6?!!!). Surely it wouldn't take a ton of time to update them (and that would also be a good opportunity to check the instructions).

What I'd like to see is a specific page for a combination of environments with absolutely precise, fully validated steps. For example, WS 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 Express is probably a common combination and there should be a specific page for that. And maybe WS 2012 and SQL Server 2012 Express is another one. These are sufficiently different that they justify dedicated installation pages, IMHO, with the steps listed only those that are relevant to that platform.

As it is (on the page I mentioned) I have to parse the various versions of SQL Server in the text of the page, throw out stuff that isn't relevant to me and so on.

It's simple too much hard work figuring out how to install DNN and my guess is that lots of people have tried and given up silently.

SQL Server Express allows for two options to access database: either like other versions of SQL Server by creating a database and attaching it, granting permission to a login and use it for access by DNN. The other option is providing an existing database file in the website (DNN provides /app_data/database.mdf for this purpose) and no additional security. This is the easiest option to setup, but you need to stop the website, if you want to access the database with a different tool like SQL Server Management Studio for any purpose.

There are no changes in database setup for DNN between SQL Server 2008, 2008R2 and 2012, file based access (AKA User Instance DB) is available in Express Editions only.

Hi Mark,

Congratulations on solving the problem.

The page you linked to is a Wiki, and you are the guy who has hit the hole most recently. Why not edit the page yourself to reflect what you discovered?

Best wishes,
