We have production site which use DNN version 5.1.4. We want to upgrade the DNN version but doesn't want to disturb existing production site. We have created Dev site, copy code and database to new server. Changed databse connection string in web.config file. I have added alias to production database because when I try to access the dev site it's redirect to existing site. After changing alias also redirects to production site. Can you please guide me how I can fix it and upgrade DNN version on my production site.

you Need to make sure the alias is being used - if you add one, make sure, there is no Redirect enabled for a previously used one (in PortalAias or PortalSettings table).

PS: please be aware, that any Manual modification of database content required DNN to be restarted (or at least Cache being cleared)
