I've just installed DNN on a fairly new Win 8 laptop but I can't get to the main install page using the dnndev.me path.  I followed the installation videos (and I've done this before successfully before on other PCs) but for some reason it's not playing ball this time.

I've set up the bindings in IIS, but if I ping dnndev.me or www.dnndev.me it times out, so that suggests to me that this isn't really even a DNN issue, but something to do with the magic dnndev routing, which I admit I don't really understand.

Does anyone have any pointers on things I should check or that I can do to try and further diagnose the issue?

Thanks, Tom

Do you have your local DNS or HOSTS file pointing this URL to your Laptop IP?  If so, check your firewall setting on your laptop and make sure you have port 80 allowing inbound requests.  If you do not have the DNS where it will resolve to your laptop IP try adding the settings (assuming it is a local DNS server on your network, I do not think you will have any love if you are using outside DNS pointing to an internal IP).  Finally, you can add an entry for this URL in the HOSTS file in C:\Windows\System 32\Drives\Etc (note you have to open notepad as an admin, then navigate using the Open option in the menu to access the HOSTS file).  Once open you add an entry for 127.0.0.1 with the URL/Host Name (no http://, just the name) you are wanting to use (you will need two entries if you want resolution for both YourDomainName.me and www.YourDomainName.me).

The entry will look like this in the HOSTS file:

127.0.0.1   YourDomainName.me
127.0.0.1   www.YourDomainName.me

Save and try browsing again.

Please let us know if this solves the issue of if it persists.

dnndev..me is registered by Chris Hammond and points to 127.0.0.1, i.e. localhost.
This means, it only works for DNN on local machine in Default IIS instance and the IIS Website bount to dnndev.me

Hi Sebastian,

I actually didn't know he had done that.  That is really cool.  Even an old timer like me learns new tricks in these forums. :-)

Cheers!
