Check that your zip file is unblocked. Right click -> properties > General Tab. If the unblock button (bottom right) is enabled then click it.

Now try unzipping and pasting again.

I just did as you recommended - indeed it was blocked. However still the same error :-(

I've tried to unzip an older upgrade version to the directory of the site and now get a completely different error:

Server Error in '/' Application.
Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: source

What version was your site before you started? What version are you trying to move to?

Do you have a backup that you can restore? A partially upgraded site is always dangerous.
