I have been away for awhile...I just tried to get my head back into things here and so I downloaded DNN 7.04 and installed it locally.  I had set up a DNN login on my local SQLExpress 2014 instance and expected the install to ask me for credentials.  To my surprise it just went through and said it was all done.  I look at my SQLExpress installation and there is no DB there.  I finally tracked down the MDF file, named database.mdf, but when I try to attach to the DB from my mgmt studio instance - it will not attach.  What is the deal here?  I want to be able to look at the db through that UI.  Is it because this is a SQL Express 2012 MDF file and I am using SQL 2014 or ...?

by Default, DNN uses a User Instance DB during Installation - unless you create a blank database upfront and specify database and Login credentials on the initial install page. You may turn a user instance DB into an attached DB by shutting down DNN, moving the database to the proper SQL Server Folder (where permissions allow SQL Server to Access it) and modify both Connection strings in your web.config file to use an attached DB ("database=xxx;integratedSecurity=true" or "database=xxx;uid=yyy:password=zzz")

PS: if you haven't made many modifications on the site, it might be easiest to restart from scratch :)

If I can just move it that would be fastest, but SQL server did not give an error when I tried to attach, so not sure permissions issue, but I will give it a try

you can't attach the database file, as long as it is in use by IIS
