I suggest not to use user instance database, instead you should create a blank (attached) database and a SQL server user account with dbowner permission and use it in your connection string (or install wizard).

His SSMS screenshot is showing he's connected already to .\sqlexpress. So no, '.' is not his default instance. SQLExpress installs as .\sqlexpress by default unless you change the name during the setup. SQLExpress works a lot like a standard SQL Server with some limitations but they don't affect its use with DNN.

 

Luke.. No valid default database.. message from DNN looks suspicious. Check your connection string in web.config. Use the regular connection string and not the SQL Express one. Use .\sqlexpress for server name. Why are you using 4 instances of SQL Server Express on the same machine? You can have multiple databases in once instance.
