A lot of Plesk for Windows users complain that the DNN install via Plesk is done in a subdirectory rather than in the root directory of a domain. (i.e. www.mydomain.nl/dnn rather than www.mydomain.nl).

To creat a dnn website in the root directory of your domain using Plesk:

  1. Add a normal domain with physical hosting in Plesk (with .NET 2.0, Webalizer/Awstats and a FTP user)
  2. Add Info@<domain>.nl mail adres
  3. Set-up Info@<domain>.nl as catch-all address
  4. Add a MS-SQL Database (e.g. dotnetnuke) to the domain
  5. Add a SQL Database user and a password (e.g. dnnuser, dnnuser) to the database
  6. Add the ASPNET user via Clients > Name > Domain > Web Directories > Permissions
  7. On the same page; assign read-, modify- and write rights to already defined Plesk users
  8. Change Web Directory Preferences so that default.aspx is the default (top) page.

For the rest it's exactly the same as a normal DNN 4.3.3 Clean installation:

  1. Unzip/upload/copy DNN 4.3.3 Install folder to httpdocs folder on the domain
  2. Change release.config (i.e. sql provider, server, uid, password etc)
  3. Rename release.config to web.config
  4. Open domain in Internet Explorer (or other webbrowser), dnn install begins
  5. When finished go to your portal

Additionally I recommend:

  1. Change MyWebsite Portal Host/Admin Passwords immediately after installation finishes
  2. Remove DNN default text/html modules from home page (especially the one with the passwords)
  3. Ammend MyWebsite Portal settings
  4. Ammend Host/Admin settings (name etc)
  5. Add Dutch Language in DNN portal
  6. Install addtional/optional modules in DNN portal (e.g. adsense etc)
  7. Install additional/optional skins/containers
  8. Upload DNN 4.3.3 Dutch Full Language pack in DNN portal
  9. Add Dutch Provinces List as Host
  10. Switch of (DNN 4.3.3) Copyright notice in Portal Settings
  11. Switch on Log history of 365 days in DNN in Portal Settings
  12. Enjoy DNN 4.3.3

The result is DNN is installed in the httpdocs and furthermore:

  • You can access/view your DNN database contents remotely and securely via your Plesk Control Panel without using SQL Enterprise Manager.
  • You don't need to have access to the server other than Plesk.

Hope this makes a lot of people happy,

note: If you don't have the Dutch Language pack for DNN 4.3.3 yet, feel free to drop me a line... I just finished it.
