Why does the DotNetNuke_4.3.3_Install package contain source code (.VB files etc)?

Install Package  =  Contains only the files needed for deployment to a webserver

Those are "code-behind" files.  It is a feature that is supported in Visual Basic.

Yes, I know what they are. I thought the Install package would just contain the ASPX files and compiled DLLs, not the code behind. The Source package is where the code behind files should live I thought. At least in the DNN 3.x packages thats how it worked.

maybe because they are not pre-compiled.  they got compiled at run time.  just a thought.

In the "standard" ASP.NET 2.0 deployment model, "codebehind" source files for are deployed to the web server and compiled at runtime.  DNN 4 follows this model.  If the new Microsoft ASP.NET deployment model sounds goofy to you, you're not the only one.  Shortly after Microsoft released Visual studio 2005, they released an "add-on" called "Web Application Projects" to allow developers to continue to compile websites to an assembly & deploy like in Visual studio 2003, ASP.NET 1.1. - basically because of feedback from developers and system admins.
