Environment:

Server    Client
W2K3 Svr Standard XP Pro
IIS 6 VS 2005 Standard
SQL 2005 Dev Edition Dnn Starter Kit.vsi

1.) Created DNN db with SQL authentication. DB user has db_owner permissions in schemas and role member. SQL is default instance.
2.) Set default.aspx as default page for webs in IIS
3.) Created new web site in VS and the DotNetNuke® Web Application Framework (Dnn) web page appears when finished. Edited web.config to reflect db info.
4.) In IIS I verify ASP 2.0 is selected and that Network Service & ASP.NET have full control of folder at inetpup\wwwroot\dnn and that FP extensions are enabled.
5.) In VS, CTRL-F5 builds with 0 failed and 0 skipped but I keep getting the DotNetNuke Configuration Error page stating

"Could not find a part of the path 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Dnn\Config\Backup_20068262153\web_.config'. " and

 If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
- the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
- the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

6.) If i do CTRL - F5 again, the DNN install will begin and then fails with...

00:00:42.859 -   Creating Portal: My Website
00:00:43.578 -   Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
00:00:43.578 -   Portal failed to install:

Somewhere my permissions are hosed big time. Any detailed fix would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Gordon

Not a detailed fix but I did notice a couple of things. It appears that your installation resides in a directory on your client machine and the server is only holding the SQL Database. If this is true then I believe your client machine is actually running IIS 5 where the permissions should be set for WindowsXP. You do not set permissions for both ASPNET and NETWORK SERVICE and since you are running your installation on a WindowsXP machine you should be setting full permissions on your ASPNET account only.

Last, I believe Frontpage Extensions should be disabled to run dotnetnuke but I could be wrong on that.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

I should've added that the site does reside on the server. When I create a new web site in VS, I point to the server by IP address. The site does get created in wwwroot on the server. I read in another post somewhere that they recommended forcing the virtual folder out to another location other than wwwroot. I just tried that and am getting the same response. I was under the impression that the FP ext's need to be running. My ISP requires them in order for my DNN site on there side to function. Is there a difference at the ISP side of IIS?

Update:

I wiped out everything as usual to get a clean slate and then re-did everything. New DB, new Web, New virtual folder, etc. After I had VS create the new web. I DID NOT do CTRL - F5. I went and verified all my permission agains. Updated web.confg with the DB info and was ready to do the VS build. But I was in the virtual folder and after I verifed that web.config had the correct settings I decided to browse to the folder. Lo & Behold the Starter Kit installed itself with no errors. However I cannot log into it. Using host or admin logins do not work. I get a login failed msg each time. And I can't get to from my client. So this all tells me that my security permissions are wacked out of shape somewhere.

Stumped!

Another Update:

This permissions thing is killing me!. As another test I created a basic html page and saved it to my webs virtual folder. From the server itself or any client, it works as expected. SO!! My basic permissions are correct. I have restarted ASP.NET 2.0 with the aspnet_regiis.exe -i command.

Question for the moment:

When I add the NT Authority\Network Service object to the permissions on the virtual and open the effective permissions tab should either or both of the inheritance pbject boxes be checked? My settings indicate the following for the NT Authority\Network Service object ...

Allow, Network Service, Full Control, Not Inherited,This Folder, subfolders and the 2 check boxes are unchecked for Effective Permissions.
