I have a 3.0.13 server with 7 portals and a 3.2.2 server with 5 portals. I would like to move 2 portals from the 3.0.13 server to the 3.2.2 server. These portals make use of no custom modules. How can I best do this and retain content?

I assume since I got no replies that this just isn't possible without doing the export content on each individual module. Considering I have several hundred this should be tons of fun.

The answer depends on a couple of things. 1. Is the 3.0.13 portals using separate databases or are they all in the same database? 2. Are the portals running from the same DNN Instance (same copy of the code in the same IIS V-Dir)?

This solution can be done even if you are using the same db and DNN/IIS instance, but it leaves some wasted db space etc.

  1. Extract the version of DNN you want to upgrade to.
  2. Copy the Portals/X folder to the new instance
  3. If you have custom module, copy their dlls and folders from the DesktopModules  dir
  4. Copy the database (I normal give the new db the same name and append the DNN version)
  5. Update the web.config with the new db info and any other info that you have added
  6. Browse the new site to trigger the upgrade

If the upgrade is successful update the PortalAlias to reflect the live sites info and switch IIS to point to the new site.  If the upgrade fails, you still have the original site...
