Im really gettin' frustrated here. Can someone please outline a proper working procedure of installing dnn 4.3.5 on a xp machine with sql express. I've read so many here, seen that lots of ppl use just sql server 2005 or something (not express) and the installation guide imho isn't helping much by saying "configuring should be done like in 3.x, but mind these following differences".

I mean do I too have to create a new db when installing on sql express? Why is the database.mdf there then in install package. etc etc.

Doing by starterkit is no problem, but i want to install it on a remote machine not having visual studio, so with the install package, but i just can't manage it. Error vary from "cannot connect to database in sqldataprovider" to the assembly and db versions not matching.

Plz, someone guide me! :(

On your remote machine do you have sql server 2k or better correct?

I would manually unzip the source file and upload the folders into the web folder on your remote machine.

MANUALLY create a database in SQL server and username and password.

Open the release.config file in the web folder and there are 2 connection strings you must update with your SQL DB info and make sure you (<!-- -->) comment out the SQL Express ones and uncomment the appropriate db conn. Set Custom Errors = Off and save this file as web.config

Goto the browser and type http://www.yourdomain.com/install/install.aspx

This is the most straight forward way and still the way I install dnn on remote machines.

I hope this helps you,

Mark

Thanks, but see, i DO want it to work with SQL express, not "normal" sql server :)
There's no real official how-to how to properly make it work with the first-time install package, cuz the manual lets u refer to v3 procedures.

Look for the thread Success! WinXp Pro SQL Express (KathrynRF).  (ID 21459)

Just got Express running on a 2003 server with it 10 minutes ago.

Note, I had to use the <connection string> listed lower in the same thread that had the server name and BOTH the Database & AttachDBFilename entries.

But after two weeks of reading here it is running!
