for those people having problems with shared installations, i have written an advanced tutorial. It works very good for dotnetnuke installations to godaddy root (normall you cant pass permission test), but if you read the articles, you can easily install dnn to all medium trusties like godaddy.

You can find my articles at http://www.mikroproje.com/DotNetNukeArticles.aspx

I also recently moved away from 1and1 for hosting....

I switched to webhost4life.  I've been fairly happy with their support and the automated install of DNN runs like a charm (even if it's not the most recent version).

That's quite funny to me - I've just made the opposite switch, from WebHost4Life to 1and1

I found WebHost4Life just too slow to use (I'm based in the UK, as are the majority of people visiting my sites), and also they charge for each and every extra domain that you point to your account (extra domains are free if they're pointed to your root, but they conveniently install DNN into a subdirectory for you! Maybe I should have just installed it myself?). They also charge per domain to be able to use email.. Fine if you only have a couple, but as my domain name count grew and those charges started to add up, it was just getting too expensive. On the plus side, I found their technical support absolutely first class - fast and efficient.

So on the flip side, after switching to 1and1, I've found their pricing model more appropriate for my needs, but their technical support absolutely stinks. I got through to a guy called Jomar in the Phillipines, and it was a real struggle to communicate with him, and he just seemed clueless. I had to repeat myself lots of times and very slowly. He kept going quiet on the phone, even after I'd asked him direct questions - and just was impossible to deal with. He basically told me to research the problem on the internet and to find a script to run!!!

Anyhow, I'm about to try the procedures described in this thread, so I've got renewed hope now, but even if I get it working, I'm left wondering whether I want to stick with 1and1 - after all... If I have another problem, I'd hate to think that I might be depending on Jomar again to help me out!!!

Wow, has everyone given up on using 1and1, or is DNN easier to install now?

I'm really wondering because I feel like an idiot for not being able to follow the directions below.  Seems to me that many steps are missing (for example, unpack ALL zips down to the file level, or what?  I can't figure how to do that in the webfile interface.  And rename WHAT to /dnn?  tmp?  root?  ???).

Anyway, is anyone using the current version of DNN with 1and1 these days, and if so, is there a more recent install with more complete info for a lugnut like me?  So far I've had no luck turning anything up except this old thread.

Thanks.

I got everything working 100% now! (as far as I can tell so far). I found some very quick and easy steps to make the install painless

Steps to install DotNetNuke 4.4.0  on 1and1 MS Hosting

1. [web files] Upload DNN install to /tmp directory
2. [web files] Unpack to root and rename to /dnn
3. [web files] Set /dnn settings to give full permissions to all users (probably should tighten up to only allow what we need)
4. [web files] Add /dnn to applications
5. Modify web.config for your SQL server settings (two different places). Also change the dbo entry to your db username (databaseOwner="dbox")
6. [web files] Upload web.config to /dnn
7. Launch site.com/dnn to install everything. DO NOT ENTER SITE
8. Launch SQL admin and go to query analyser.
9. Enter "select * from portalalias" and hit submit. HTTPAlias should say site.com/dnn
10. Enter the following 3 lines, then hit submit. Notice the no trailing slash.
update PortalAlias
set HTTPAlias = 'www.site.com'
where PortalAliasID = 1
11. Do step 10 again to verify the HTTPalias is now www.site.com
12. Go to your FTP client, move the contents of /dnn to the root of your site. (all permissions that were set in webfiles will stay with the files) THIS IS A BIG TIME SAVER!
13. Go to the root of your website and enjoy! You should not have to copy the siteurls.config (I don't think I did, because when I tried to copy it prematurely, it was already there!)

After hours of reading and debating, I just opened up an account on website4life (or whatever).  I like DNN because I'm not a code-junky.  I can and have built other sucessful portals but only after they have been installed.

@Frank - If you're willing to offer your services I'd gladly pay a reasonable fee for you to set up DNN on my 1and1.  If not, no boggie, I'll report as to how easy this new host is (or not).

I woudl like to thnak all of you for your comments, questions, and guidence on this thread.  You guys are great.
