I'm a real amature (might even be over rating myself) with SQL server administration and I'm trying to get DotNetNuke installed on a server to play around with it before I commit to having it installed on my hosting server.

I followed the steps and put in my connection string, but I keep getting an error during the DotNetNuke first time run setup telling me that it can not connect to the SQL server database. The connection string I'm using is "Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=DNN;pwd=password;"

In an attempt to discover what is going wrong I wrote a quick C# (.NET 1.1) application to try connectiong to the same database and the exception thrown tells me "Login failed for user 'DNN'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL server connection."

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Just a guess but make sure the uid DNN has proper Login/User rights granted.

Also check that the SQL server instance has been set up for mixed mode authentication (allowing SQL Server Authentication and/or Windows Authentication) rather than just Windows Authentication.  The error "not associated with a trusted SQL server connection" leads me to believe that it was set up for Windows Authentication only.  This can be checked/changed (using SQL Server Management Studio Express, etc.) by right clicking over the server name in the Object Explorer window, clicking on Properties, then selecting the Security Page.  I believe that it will be necessary to restart SQL Server (Express) for any change to become effective.

Bill,

Thanks for the info!

That got me past not being able to connect to the DB.

Now I'm getting this error during the setup:

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error
The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - Shared Memory Provider: )

I have tried several different times. The last time, I stopped IIS, deleted the DotNetNuke DB and re-created it and still the same result.

Thanks to all in advance for helping me figure this one out.

Tim

Check that the Client Protocols for the SQL Server instance are enabled for Shared Memory, TCP/IP and NamedPipes. If your SQL Server is running on your local PC, you should be able to right click on My Computer then select Manage to bring up the Computer Management console.  Click on Services and Applications then find your SQL server under SQL Server Configuration Manager.  If you are running SQL Server Express you should see an entry like "Protocols for SQLEXPRESS" or if you are running SQL SERVER 2005 you should see and entry for SQL Native Client Configuration and under that Client Protocols.  Click on either Protocols for SQLEXPRESS or Client Protocols to show the Protocols by Name.  Protocols Shared Memory, Named Pipes, and TCP/IP should all show Enabled as the status.  If not, right click on the protocol name and select Enable.
