How is a newbie (to DNN) supposed to get a grip of what the requirements is for DNN, to install, and how and what to install?
I wonder if I was mislead by the info on CMS-matrix (www.cmsmatrix.org) about DNN.
There I got the info that (among others)
System Requirements (for DNN)
Root Access - No
Shell Access - No
I looked around dotnetnuke.com, but couldn't find any more specific information, except that "... download a package which includes the documentation and read the installation documentation first".
So I decided to downloaded a package, but the info on Your site about which package to install is a bit confusing:
- Source Package - Contains everything, including full application source code
- Install Package - Contains only the files needed for deployment to a web-server
- Documentation Package - Contains only developer documentation
But further down i have to choose from:
- Source
- Starter Kit
- Upgrade
- Documentation
- Install
- Utility
The explanation "If you are new to DotNetNuke we encourage you to download a package which includes the documentation and read the installation documentation first." is of great help!!! The first explanation states "Documentation Package - Contains only developer documentation". So the "documentation package" is probably not for me at all.
Now, if I could see the package-sizes, perhaps I could assume if I should get Source-, Starter Kit- or Install-package, but that doesn't show. According to the first explanation of the packages, Install seems to me a bit lacking of something - "contains only ..." - and since I am a starter on this DNN-thing and don't intend to tamper with source-code, at least not initially, I assumed that the "Starter Kit" should be right for me.
When I had downloaded the Starter-Kit-zip-file, and unpacked it to a normal folder, i started looking in that folder, expecting to find the mentioned "installation documentation" but found only a file "DotNetNuke.vscontent", and I couldn't get any installation-tips out of that! Apart from that there was only five more zip-files. I took a guess at DotNetNuke.zip, since that was the biggest, and the others seemed to contend more specific parts or modules (according to their names). But where to unzip this file DotNetNuke.zip? I decided to put it in the parent-folder, since there wasn't really any other files there, besides the mentioned DotNetNuke.vscontent and the other zip-files. Now I found a "Documentation"-folder! And therein a "Readme.txt" (also Contributors.txt and License.txt, but as I assumed - not for me now).
Now, in the "Readme.txt"-file a could read:
- .NET Framework 2.0 must be installed
- unzip package into C:\DotNetNuke
But, since I intend to install my CMS to a web-hosted server, I don't have possibility to install just what ever I like. And I don't have access to create folders in the root on the web-host.
So I assume I have to give up on DNN and look for another CMS, hopefully I can find something easier to install than DNN.
