I got an installation up and running quite quickly.

And I only had one little problem... users were being logged out after 1 or 2 minutes...

So I played with the settings within DNN - but these didn't seem to help.

So then I played with some of the Cookie timeout settings in web.config...

Only I have this feeling I broke something as now no users can login :-(

I'm thinking maybe I overwrote the machine keys for encryption and decryption? (the ones in the file are now the same as the ones in the default install package)

I've tried the hints in a few blogs such as http://www.devprise.com/2006/09/26/how-to-reset-a-dnn-password-at-the-database - but these haven't helped...

Is there any way back from here? If not then I can reinstall...

Thanks

Hwood

If you didn't backup you web.config, I think you will have to reinstall.
Users getting logged out like this is often caused by settings of the Application pool..
(In IIS)

Thanks.

I've fixed the login issues by removing all the security from the passwords in the database (for each user I set the type to 0 from the default 2, deleted the password salt and then typed a new password in clear text).

I've still got the problem that users seem to get logged out after maybe 2 minutes of inactivity (all the settings I find say 60000 now) - can anyone point me at the correct help or forum topic on what's going wrong here...

Also if I want to start a new install, then what do I have to delete from my database? (I'm using SQL Server and I can't just create a new database because of my hosting plan)

Any help appreciated (although I think I might be in the wrong forum topic now?)

Thanks!

In case anyone else gets into this same situation....

There is a solution!

If you look in the Config directory then there will probably be a backup of the old web.config file!

If only I'd known.... it would have saved me a heap of work!

Slodge,

First, the reason why you could no longer log in is because the new installation has different encryption keys than your old one (in the Web.Config file) - Next time you run an upgrade, make sure you back-up your old config file and copy the encryption keys over to the new one. The way you got it to work right now is not so safe (i.e. you said you left passwords in clear text) - this is a no-no - you can easily get hacked! (Don't forget that these forums are open to the public so now everybody knows )

I would seriously consider re-installing from scratch and follow all the DNN install procedures.
You should be able to call up your host and tell them to wipe (after backing-up, of course) your old database out and simply create a new empty one. - That should work for you - they may charge you a fee though well worth it.

My 2 cents... hope this bit of information helps you.
