I've searched high and low for tutorials on moving a Dotnetnuke website to a new server, but I guess I'm not searching high or low enough. Does anyone know of a resource that takes us through the steps? Can we just copy the files - seems like some kind of database setup would be required...

Yes. It is simple. Please follow these steps.

1) Copy all your web files to the new server.

2) Backup your SQL database and ftp to your new server.

3) Restore the SQL database in the new server.

4) Change the connection string in the Web.config file to use the new SQL database.

5) Now your web site should be up.

Note: You need to add the portal aliase first before the backup if you change the domain name.

It's basically a three step process:

1. FTP all files from the old website to the new website.

2. Use SQL Server Management Studio to backup your existing database on the source website.

3. Use SQL Server Management Studio to restore the database backup into the destination database.

Don't know how this would work if your source or destination database reside on a Unix server...

Lee Sykes from DNNCreative has a great descriptive link for this issue:

What about the machine key in web.config? Can the same machineKey be used on different servers?

Thanks

Michael
