I turned off the setting in web.config to allow for authentication.  I am now going to go through the Active Directory settings and make sure that is working correctly and try to turn it back on.

I don't consider it a resolution, but I got around it.

I started by turning off the web.config authentication portion by commenting it out.  Then I accessed the website and the installation completed.

Then I went back to web.config and turned the authentication back on by uncommenting.  I went to the Active Directory setup and went through that other post in here about setting it up, making sure my settings were the same.

I am now upgraded with authentication working.  It doesn't work perfectly, as there are intermittent prompts for login information (nothing like those intermittent problems!) where every other access, or so, experiences a request for login.

I was able to get past the same problem the same way you did.  Do you use AD authentication with sub portals? If so do your users stay in sync between the portals or do you need to maually add and update them?
