I have DNN 4.3.5 installed locally.

I just went all the way through Michael Washingtons tutorial on creating a module.. and that was great... then I made the mistake of installing a free skin I got from somwhere...

It failed to load/initialise.. got that error about there being no skin files etc...

So I clicked on the Restore Default Skin link.....

And I got this error...

An error has occurred.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage.Page_Init(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\DNN\Default.aspx.vb:line 461 at System.Web.UI.Control.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Page.OnInit(EventArgs e) at DotNetNuke.Framework.PageBase.OnInit(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.InitRecursive(Control namingContainer) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

So, now I'm wondering what I can do to get this dnn site back working... I don't want to reinstall cos of all the work I did with the module tutorial...

As its installed locally I can access the database directly.. should there be some table I can just reset a value in?

Thanks

Vida

not sure what is going on there, can you contact me offline about what skin you used (support@apollo-software.nl). In the mean time, there are a couple of workarounds you can try:

  • If you have access to the DB, just delete all records in the Skins table
  • Alternatively, you can delete the physical folder of the skin that caused the error. This folder is located either in /portals/_default/skins (if you installed it as a host skin), or in /portals/0/skins (if you installed it as a portal skin)

in both occasions, the site needs to be recycled, you can do that by resetting IIS or by going to the windows taskmanager and killing the process aspnet_wp.exe

try to set it directly in portal settings. If you cannot access your portal any more, you will need to alter this setting directly in portals table in your database.

AFAIK skin settings of the portals are located in the Skins table, not the Portals table

oops, Erik is right, you need to adopt the path in table Skins for the appropriate portalID and SkinType (0: main, 1: amin)
