I don't know exactly how to ask my question, I'm quite new to DNN and still figuring my way around DNN.

What I want to do is:

1. Have an announcements module on the home page, with the usual links to pages with news items.

2. Have the news pages automatically be connected to a "News" menu item, but I don't understand if this means I have to create a "News" page, or if I can just have "News" be a menu item only and have the news pages be in the dropdown list of items from the "News" menu item.

How do I do this??

I am also looking at the 'Articles Module' from Efficeon Consulting, I also like the idea of the .Janet and Orizonti news modules, but for now I am trying to work with the default modules or with free modules before asking my agency to pay for new shareware modules.

Thank you, Tom

Depending on what you want to do you can get by with the core modules. If you want to create a seperate page for each news item, and link to them from the announcements you can. The efficion news articles module, ventrian news articles, and Engage Publish modules also give you more flexibility and different features.

There are a lot of things you can do within the core functionality, 3rd party modules tend to help make things easier to reproduce within different environments.

You can create a new page called "News", and in the page settings | Advanced Settings | Appearance

check "disabled":
If the page is disabled it is not available to users of the site. You can use this option to suppress content that you might wish to show at a later time.
Then create daughter pages (pages who's "parent" is your previously created "News" page)
On the menu, it  should  show <edit> the top level "News" page AND </edit> your daughter pages, but not allow navigation to the actual "News" page.

's how I do it.

Will the disabled page still appear as an item in the top-level menu bar??
That is, would "News" still appear there??
I will try this tomorrow.
Thank you, :) tom

YES.
Sorry, I kinda left that important detail out

There is at least one caveat: it depends on your skin/menu system...

If you are using the ubiquitous SolPart menu- this technique should work.
If you are using the HouseMenu- it will depend on how it is configured.

disclaimer: this is one way to achieve what you are asking- there may be other (more elegant?) ways about it, of which I am unaware.
