Hi

I've only just noticed and assume this is a problem that's been there for a while but wondered if anyone has an answer.

I can log into most of my portals fine. However on some of them if I try to log in with an invalid username or password I get:

"A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

I'm using DNN 4.3.4 with SQL server 2000.

I assume this is a bug in DNN. Anyone know why some portals work and others fail? Tried changing skins but doesn't help.

For an example, try loggig into www.angusbeare.com with a ficticious username.

please upgrade to latest 4.3.7 or 4.4.1, due to security issues - and AFAIR this issue has been solved as well.

OK. Thanks.

Last time I tried to upgrade I got horrible problems and ended up rebuilding the entire setup with a clean DNN install.
Hence, I'm reluctant to go there with much development to do and sites I don't want offline for long.

My DNN hosts re-invent.com are also reluctant to do upgrades and dissuaded me from going to 4.4.0 due to a bug that caused host settings to be lost.

Can you provide any advice regarding upgrade? I know I need to go there but I don't want to get in a huge mess. My sites have all sorts of modules such as Nukelet, UMG image module, forms etc. Do most users have success upgrading? Will I have to re-install all the modules?

Angus,

If you are not sure make a backup of your site and restore it on a local System (WinXP Professional/Windows Server with IIS, SQL 2005 Express) where you can safely test the upgrade and perform it on the life system after success.

Re-invent went ahead yesterday and upgraded me to 4.4.1 with the option to roll back.

I'm delighted to say it all went smoothly and everything seems to work. So far no unexpected 'object ref' errors.

DNN is improving at a rapid rate now and is a far better product than it was when I started using it over a year ago. Bugs are fixed immediately and the pace of change seems to be frenetic.

I'm looking forward to seeing what difference the performance improvements make.

cheers
Angus
