I'm trying to understand how hosting, domains, subdomains, virtual directories and child portals all work together.

So, I set up DNN and get it running with one portal.  That part is working fine.  Let's say I access it via www.davidsplace.com.

Then I create a child portal and the install appears to work ok.  But how do I access it?  What URL do I use?

I want to create a sub-domain called DemoOne.davidsplace.com, and have a child portal at it.  Can I do that?  How?  Any Gotchas?

thanks!

To access your newly created child portal with your example you would use

http://www.davidsplace.com/<portalname>

Where <portalname> is the name of your new child portal.

To create a child portal at a non-standard location you can set up a portal alias when you create the portal to point to demoone.davidsplace.com.  You might need to check with your hosting provider to have that subdomain setup, but I do not believe that is necessary, you could try it, and see if it works!

Thanks!  Tried it, worked great!

Ok, here's another deployment question in a hosted environment.

Sam wants his own portal under his own domain, but my hosting provider will charge extra for another database.  So, I want to set him up under his own domain, but he needs to be a child portal.

In otherwords, in "reality" he would be http://www.davidsplace.com/samsportal.

However, he wants to reach his child portal as http://www.samsportal.com , I still want to access mine as http://www.davidsplace.com, and I only want to use one database.  Can I do that?  How?
