Hi folks,

I've tried for the last 4 days to deploy DNN441 onto a public site a Windows Shared hosting account at www.2trs.co.uk - Alas, my lack of success forces me to seek the advice of the guru's who frequent these forums in the hope of being able to solicit some advice.

What I've done.

  1. Created a remote MSSQL 2005 database on on the MSSQL 2005 Server provided by my shared host
  2. Backed up the remote database and downloaded to my local machine
  3. Restored the database, downloaded in 2 above, into my local instance of MSSQL 2005 Express
  4. On my local machine ran the setup.exe provided with the DNN 4.4.1. download to install DNN under my local IIS using the database on local instance of MSSQL 2005 Express created in 3. above
  5. Install worked fine, can view site locally, no problem.... Deploy????
  6. Backed up Local Database, now containing DNN Schema created during install, uploaded to remote MSSQL 2005 and restored, also placing DNN schema into my remote DNN Database
  7. Copied all DNN files from root of my local IIS DNN Website, via FTP, to root folder of my shared host site at www.2trs.co.uk
  8. Modified web.config to reflect the two needed changes to Connectionstrings
  9. Pointed my browser to www.2trs.co.uk .... PROBLEM!!

I type http://www.2trs.co.uk into my browser and it the immeadiately redirects to MY LOCALLY INSTALLED DNN??? (http://localhost/dnn441/)  The site appears but with an error in every module box similar to....

Error: Links is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: connectionString ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: connectionString at Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data.SqlHelper.ExecuteReader(String connectionString, String spName, Object[] parameterValues) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Links.SqlDataProvider.GetLinks(Int32 ModuleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Links.LinkController.GetLinks(Int32 ModuleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Links.Links.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

This has me stumpted! Seem to have run out of ideas, can anyone offer any advice that would help to get DNN running? I would, of course, be most grateful for any advice at all.

Thanks
Regards
TS

it is most likely, that you did not adopt the second database connection string in your web.config. please make sure, that both connection strings are identical.

The fact that it is redirecting locally indicates that it is reaching your database with the current connection string, but because the only portal alias in the database is your localhost, it redirects there. Given that...you would need to add the new portal alias to the database.  (adding 'http://www.2trs.co.uk' to your 'portalalias' table).  You can either add it on your local install through the application and restore the database again, or update the database on your server directly -- this should resolve the redirection problem.

Yes, indeed Ian. I discovered a good blog this afternoon which explainded the problem regarding Portal Alias's, particularly when trying to deploy an installed version on a local machine to a remote machine, So... problem sorted. Thank you very much for taking the trouble to respond.
