I have just upgraded to 4.4.1 from v3x.  Previously I had users fill in their address as compulsory fields when registering a new user account.  I can still set these fields compulsory for the 'my account' module, but this no longer forces the user to fill in these fields during registration.

Is there a way to do this, or a suggested work around?

As an admin if you go to the user accounts page, there's a link on there to user settings link. On that page you can set two settings at the bottom of the page, Require Valid Profile for Login, and for Registration. Try changing those to fit your needs.
