 |   What I am hoping (hope springs eternal) for is:
  1. to make a backup a scheduled task in DNN or at least to initiate the backup from the  DNN admin or host accounts
  2. to zip the backed up files and make them available viaFTP or even transfer them to another site.

theres no scheduled task that I know of, normally your hosting provider will do database backups as part of their terms of services. Some control panels let you control where the backup file outputs to, or you could ask your hosting provider to ensure that the file is within your webroot so you can ftp it down. Theres a useful SQL Backup module @ http://www.gruposur.com.uy/Descargas/tabid/96/Default.aspx that's probably worth a look.
