hi, the organisation i work for has a dnn site 3.3.3 setup by an external IT company.
The site is running very slowly and we have had the hosting company look into this and they advised that the server is fine. They even setup the site on its own virtual private server running on its own cpu and database server to see if it would improve things but it didnt. They host other DNN sites and they run fine, they suggested the amount of content the site has may be the issue?

I have setup our intranet using 3.3.4 and it runs fine, the only difference between the 2 sites is that the internet site uses Content Manager module thoughout the site. I suspect this could slow things down abit considering it has to check versioning and so on?

The server caching on the internet site is set to heavly cache.

can anyone give me any suggestions?

site is http://www.ihc.org.nz

thanks inadvance

You are right, the site is quite slow (8 seconds)

The page contians a lot of small  images and is about 280kb.

But that should make it react this slow.

It seems to take a while before any data get's posted back to the browser at all and the images load quite slow too.

What you could do is ask for a backup of the database and copy the DNN folder and test on a local machine.

By the way, hosting companies always say the server is fine...:-)

You could also upgrade to the 4.5.1, since there have been a lot of performance enhancements in the latest DNN versions.

As with Timo's recommendation I think you could really benefit from an upgrade (if all modules work in the new version, but they should)

I would also look at the sitelog and eventlog tables and see if you happen to have a large number of entries there, recently it has been identified that trimming the size of these tables can greatly help performance.

It turns out that the menu structure house of nuke was part of the problem. There are heaps of pages in the site and the way house of nuke worked seemed to slow the site down quite a bit.

I just upgraded the site to 4.5.3 and replaced the house of nuke menu with the solpart menu and its running just fine!

Hello Simon

Perhaps your site might benefit from setting up site compresson such as Snapsis.Pageblaster  (from: www.snapsis.com ) which will guarantee your site will load faster.  Also, you might consider setting up host-tracker.com which could be set up to visit your site on a regular basis, thus keeping it alive.
