Is this a bug or a "feature"?

I have a page that I have had on my site that I now want to redirect to a page elsewhere on the web. So I went to the advanced page properties and set the link option to external url and set my URL. When I click on the page from the menu I get redirected as expected. But if I go to the URL of the orginal page I do not get redirected. This seems like a bug to me. Anyone dealt with this before? Also as a side note it might be nice if the Page link options also allowed for a target to be specified.

Thanks.

The page setting is only for ajusting the link in the navigation menu.
I don't see it as a bug because if it always went to another site then you would not be able to get to the real page for edit.

If you really want it to go to another site all the time you could do it with some simple Javascript.  Add an html module to the page in question and go to the Settings for this module, then look in the advanced section for the "Header" field of this html module.  You want to put Javas cript here because it is a regular text field and this will keep it from being mangled by the rich text editor.

In the header field add this (the word script has a space added so i can post it here):

<s cript type="text/javas cript">
window.location.href='http://www.othersite.com'
<s cript>

If you are wanting to get search engines to follow it though, you may want to do something like what is described at the following link:

Thanks for the help John. They are good suggestions, but they won't really work in my case.

I was assuming that the redirect funtion would be something that wouldn't happen in admin mode. That's why I thought it was a bug. If that's not what it was indented to do then I shouldn't try and use it that way. But to me this would be a nice feature to have built-in.

My use case would be that I have a page that people are linking to from all over the web. I decide later that I want them to go someplace else from that same link. If it is going to be permentant them maybe I would try and phase in the new address, but that would take some time, so I would need both for a time. If it is only temporary, and I know it, I may still want the original page there to work on, but yet have the public redirected until I am ready and then turn the redirect back off. Maybe this would even be role based, although that could get complicated fast. But the logical trouble is to me that you have two different outcomes for doing theoretically the same thing. Clicking a link to a page and going to that page's URL should yield the same thing. That's where the bug part comes in for me.

I'm just laying my thoughts out for comment. Maybe if others agree it can be a feature request.

John, really, thanks for your comments.

It's not a bad idea.  I would also add the otption to specify a 301 or 302 redirect.

  You should put it into the new Roadmap wishlist :

Good idea. I just added it to the wishlist. If you are reading this and think this is a good idea check out the wishlist and give this enhancement a vote.

BTW if the folks that run the DNN website ever want to put the RoadMap wishlist someplace else then the above link would not work. This is exactly why we need full redirection support.

Thanks
